Family. Keepin’ this one simple…

I have two beliefs about family to share here:

  1. Family does not have to be blood-related.
If you read my post on community, you’ll have some insight as to why I say this. My experience of my community in Denver was one of the most amazing I’ve ever had. My “real” family was not nearby, and so that community became my family. They are in my heart and in my soul (can’t you just hear Rod Stewart crooning that ballad…) 😛

  2. There is no other bond like real family.
I don’t talk to my family much. There’s no bad-blood or anything like that. We just live very separate lives. And yet. One of the most powerful forces that I am aware of on a nearly daily basis is that of the support of my family. If I were in need, there is no doubt in my mind that my mother, my father, my brothers, aunts, uncles and a host of cousins would be there for me. (Right Lori? Right Yvette?) That is a very comforting thought.

Wow. I have tears as I type that last line. I think I am reverberating with the truth of it. For a woman who doesn’t connect much with family members, I am overcome with gratitude in this moment for the truth I just wrote. I am not alone in this world.

Thank you, thank you to my family.

Until next time, may you love  your life today.

I believe that family is something but not everything. Shared DNA is a tricky thing. It binds us together and creates havoc. I believe that loving family is a privilege that is sometimes enjoyable and often a challenge that grows us up. Family should be a commitment, but not a dysfunctional drama that requires us to forgo our individuality. Family is a place for love and for the challenge of facing oneself when relationships are strained.

I believe family can be one of the grandest places from where we draw our uniqueness.
I believe that a family, laughing about life they have endured, shared, and grown in together is one of the greatest gifts.
I believe my family loves me, always have, always will.
I believe family is an imperfect part of wholeness.
I love my family deeper than the ocean, and stonger than a rip-tide.
